Care for your pets with CBD
As CBD has become a popular wellness trend, more and more products have hit the market, as has a confusing amount of information online. Of course, you want to treat your animal companions like royalty, but it can be difficult to determine if CBD products are safe and effective. Have you heard about this all-natural remedy to help your pet with anxiety, chronic pain, and other health issues? An increasing number of pet parents turn to cannabidiol (better known as CBD oil) to improve their lives.
However, some dogs turn their snouts up if you try to apply CBD oil on their tongue or mix it in with their food. CBD dog treats and other edibles can be a good alternative — as long as you find high-quality products.
Human use of CBD oil is growing in popularity, but are CBD oil, treats, and other edibles safe for dogs?
Many vets recommend CBD products for dogs, even as veterinary scientific research into this new remedy is in its infancy. However, studies in humans show that cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory effects and can help with anxiety, aggression, pain, seizures, muscle spasms, and neurological disorders.
Like humans, dogs and cats have an endocannabinoid system that allows them to benefit from CBD oil. This system allows the active ingredients in hemp to help relieve many symptoms.
CBD dog treats and oils can ease several conditions your pup may suffer from either occasionally or chronically, including:
- Anxiety and stress
- Moderate to severe pain
- Chronic inflammation
- Joint pain
- Digestion problems
Most owners decided to use CBD products in dogs and cats to treat pain management, seizures, neoplasia, quality of life, and anxiety or other behavioral issues, according to research.
Though there are few studies currently available on the therapeutic potential of CBD for dogs, the research is promising. Colorado State University published a study designed to assess the short-term effect of CBD on seizure management found a significant correlation between CBD and seizure reduction. The results of this study suggests potentially positive results and highlights a need for further studies.
Three pain-management studies also highlight CBD’s potential to treat osteoarthritis.
A small study published in 2019 found that epileptic dogs given CBD in addition to seizure medication had significantly fewer seizures than those that received seizure medication and a placebo.
Assessments performed by owners in one study indicated a significant reduction in pain and increase in activity levels when their dogs received CBD-rich hemp oil. In another study, 94 percent of owners felt the treatment positively impacted their dog’s quality of life. They reported that their dogs slept less and interacted with family more while using a CBD-rich hemp product.
A third osteoarthritis pain-management study found that dogs showed improvement walking.
So, you’re probably wondering if treats or oils are more effective for your dog. In general, CBD oil is a better delivery system. In humans, research has shown that the most effective way for the body to absorb CBD oil is by placing it under your tongue. This hasn’t yet been proven in dogs, but some experts assume it’s similar for dogs.
For dogs who aren’t fans of oils, CBD treats (the canine alternative to CBD gummies) can be a great alternative. They come in a variety of flavors (like bacon) that dogs will love, and dosing guidelines can be easier to follow than with CBD oils.
If you and your veterinarian decide that you should try CBD as a treatment for your pet, there are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing CBD oil. Not all oils are the same; you’ll want high-quality CBD oil to have a better chance of it working.
Look for organic. If the CBD oil is not organic, it at least should not contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
Don’t only shop based on price. Higher quality and purity are usually associated with a higher cost. A cheaper option could contain toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure your CBD oil is free of additives.
Get the analysis. The manufacturer should provide a certificate that certifies the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD products contain only small amounts of CBD. It is always worthy to consider these points when thinking about CBD for pets.
